A Performance Filled With Culture, 2nd August 2017
A huge thank you goes out to the NCS group who volunteered for us at St John’s Welcome Centre a few weeks back. Where currently we are working with service users of the Hope for Abbey Project to create an original drama performance about culture. From start to finish the NCS young people were incredible!
During the initial rehearsal, they put the Hope for Abbey group at real ease. The production is still in its early development stages, yet the NCS group made every effort to celebrate those performing.
Both groups were later brought together to make banners, which will be displayed outside of the centre on the performance day. The NCS group again were outstanding, as they supported Hope for Abbey service users to create a range of stunning designs. The atmosphere was lovely to watch, with all united.
Even when thrown in at the deep end, the NCS group took to the challenge. Having never signed in Makaton before, the group were asked to join in with our final song, ‘True Colours.’ All performed the song, signing the chorus in unison – it was an amazing experience to have been a part of.
The afternoon finished with a beautiful impromptu speech from one of the Hope for Abbey service users, who thanked everyone for their efforts, explaining how it had made a real difference to them and how much it was appreciated.
This is an inspiring group who through their two week NCS programme campaigned on the behalf of people with disabilities. They even created their own campaign called ‘Action 4 Access.’
Thank you again!
On a final note we wanted to say a special thanks to a very talented young lady, Maya, who took over our social media for a day. Here are Maya’s posts…
